December 6th (1631)
Venus transits the Sun, as first predicted by Kepler
On this day, in 1631, Venus crossed in front of the Sun's disc, an astronomical phenomenon named “transit”. This was first predicted by German astronomer Johannes Kepler, who also showed that transits of Venus follow a cyclic pattern in time. They are among the rarest of predictable astronomical phenomena. They occur in a pattern that repeats, in general, every 243 years, with pairs of transits eight years apart separated by long periods of 121,5 and 105,5 years.
Canção de Embalar (1968)
Zeca Afonso
"Canção de Embalar" (Lullaby) is a song from the 1968 album Cantares do Andarilho (Songs of the Wandering Man) from Zeca Afonso, a Portuguese singer and composer. "Canção de Embalar" mentions the "morning star", which is, in fact, the planet Venus. Zeca Afonso lived a large part of his life under the Portuguese dictatorship regime and some of his songs have a strong political meaning.
