December 10th (1999)
ESA's XMM-Newton mission is launched
On this day, in 1999, European Space Agency's XMM-Newton mission was launched. XMM-Newton is a space telescope to study the Universe in X-rays, which are blocked by the Earth's atmosphere. It is the biggest scientific satellite built in Europe. XMM-Newton can detect many more X-ray sources than any previous X-ray satellite, offering an unprecedented vision of violent phenomena in the Universe, from exploding stars to the infall of matter into supermassive black holes.
Cygnus X-1 (1977)
Rush
"Cygnus X-1" is a song by the Canadian progressive rock band Rush. It is divided in two sections, Book I: The Voyage, released in 1977 as part of the album A Farewell to Kings, and Book II: Hemispheres, released in 1978 as part of the album Hemispheres. The song tells the story of an explorer travelling on a spaceship in the direction of the black hole Cygnus X-1.

The x-ray is her siren song
My ship cannot resist her long
Nearer to my deadly goal
Until the Black Hole —
Gains control…
