December 12th (1871)
Eclipse shows that the corona is part of the Sun
On this day, in 1871, French astronomer Jules Janssen analysed the spectrum of the light around the rim of a solar eclipse seen from India. The observation confirmed his own theory that the corona, normally only visible during a solar eclipse, is a physical part of the Sun and is composed of both hot gases and cooler particles. We know today that the temperature of the solar corona reaches two million degrees Celsius , much more than the 5500 degrees Celsius of the surface, but it is made of very thin, though very energetic, gas.
Eclipse (1973)
Pink Floyd
"Eclipse" is the last track of the album Dark Side of the Moon (1973), from the English band Pink Floyd. According to Roger Waters, songwriter and bassist of the band, "the album uses the Sun and the Moon as symbols; the light and the dark; the good and the bad..."
The sun is in tune
But the sun is eclipsed
By the moon
