December 22nd (1911)
Grote Reber, pioneer of radioastronomy is born
On this day, in 1911, Grote Reber, American engineer, amateur astronomer and pioneer of radioastronomy, was born. He was the first to build a parabolic dish radiotelescope and to survey the whole sky in the radio frequencies. As a result of his work, bright radio sources were discovered, namely Cygnus A, a radiogalaxy, and Cassiopeia A, the remnant of a star that exploded as a supernova.

Contact (1997)
Robert Zemeckis
"Contact" is a 1997 movie directed by Robert Zemeckis and based on the homonymous novel by Carl Sagan. It tells the story of a scientist from the SETI - Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence programme that, through a radio signal, finds strong evidence of the existence of alien life. The early part of the movie creatively explores how radio and television emissions from Earth travel through Space, and may one day reach neighbouring planetary systems.
