On this day, in 1761, Jean-Louis Pons was born, the most successful discoverer of comets through direct visual observation. His visual accuracy and photographic memory enabled him the discovery, or codiscovery, of 37 comets during his lifetime, 26 of these have his name. A crater on the Moon was also designated in his honour.
