On this day, in 1973, Pioneer 10 captured the first close-up photos of Jupiter. It contains instrumentation to study Jupiter and its surroundings, the cosmic radiation, the asteroid belt and solar wind. It also carries a plaque with information about Humans and the Earth. Moving forward from Jupiter and away from the Sun, its last signal was received on Earth in 2003, but Pioneer 10 continues its journey to exit the Solar System and into interstellar space.

A set of six impressionist pieces for solo piano, "Jupiter's Moons" was composed by Judith Lang Zaimont in 2000. Each piece is named after one of Jupiter's moons, and was inspired by both its mythological and geophysical features.
