December 15th (1970)
First landing on another planet
On this day, in 1970, Venera 7 landed on Venus, becoming the first human-made object to send data to Earth from the surface of another planet. The data revealed that Venus, on the surface, has an average temperature of 460 degrees Celsius, and the pressure is as high as 1.6 kilometres deep underwater in an ocean on Earth.
The Evening Star (1864)
Jean Baptiste Camille Corot
"The Evening Star" is an oil on canvas painting from 1864 by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, a 19th century French painter. With a strong neoclassic influence, a large fraction of Corot's work involved painting landscapes. The painting of "The Evening Star" was supposedly inspired by a young woman singing verses from Alfred de Musset's poem "The Willow: A Fragment" (1830), in which the evening star is hailed as a distant messenger.
